GirlsCode is a virtual mobile app challenge for primary and secondary female students. A team of minimum 2 to 5 students and 1 teacher will need to work together to create mobile app. 

About The Hackathon

GirlsCode is a virtual mobile app challenge open to female students in Sarawak only. There are two categories:

  • Junior Category (Primary 4 – 6, Form 1 – 2) 
  • Senior Category (Form 3 – 5)

Participants will select problems from UN Sustainable Development Goal and create mobile app to address the problem as well as applying commercial lens and identify Go To Market strategy. Each group will go through 3 months of workshops to work on their solutions and get ready for final pitching at the end of the program.

Only 10 teams (5 from each category) will be selected to present during Demo Day (after apps and proposals from all teams have been reviewed).

*All briefings, workshops and demo day will be conducted virtually.

Competition Requirements


This hackathon open for female students from Sarawak schools only, whereas the teacher/mentor can be either male or female.


Groups to consists of minimum 2 or maximum 5 students guide by a teacher/mentor.


Each group need to participate in 12 workshops to identify their problem, solutions, coding the app, defining Go To Market strategy (senior group) and pitching (workshops are all free of charge).


Each member will be requested for RM20 refundable commitment fee.


Do I need a team to participate?

Yes, you need to form a team. The team will need to consist of minimum 2 or maximum 5 students + 1 teacher/mentor.

Can my team have a mix of members from different locations?

Yes, your team can be from different location. However, they all must be from one of the schools in Sarawak.

I am not from public school, can I still participate?

Yes, as long as the school is in Sarawak. Public, private and International school are all welcome to participate and form a team.

Can my team have a mix of members from different age groups?

Yes, as long as they are within the same category (Junior: Primary 4-6 + Form 1-2) (Senior: Form 3-5).

I have little/no knowledge about coding. Can I still participate?

Yes, we will guide you on the coding part during the 12 workshops.


Top 5 teams from each category selected for Demo Day will also received Certificate of Achievement.
